Sabena Flight 548
On February 15, 1961, the entire U.S. figure skating team died in a plane crash in Belgium on its way to the that year’s world championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Included in that tragedy were 6 Broadmoor Skating Club Members and their family members. The Broadmoor Skating Club created a memorial as a tribute to its 1961 World Team Members who perished. A skate-shaped granite bench located near the site of the old Ice Palace at the Broadmoor Hotel stands in mute remembrance to those lives lost.
